4 ways to tactfully combat the rising Air Pollution in India

Did you know, as per a study, at least 140 million people in India breathe air that is 10 times or more over the WHO safe limit. 13 of the world’s 20 cities with the highest annual levels of air pollution are in India

Now as we get into peak winters in most part of the country, one can rightfully estimate a dip in air quality with rising pollution levels mingling with smog.

This is bound to cause health related issues, particularly in people who already have respiratory conditions such as asthma or bronchitis. COVID-19 too has contributed to this problem as the lung function of people who are or were affected, has been compromised.

Hence it is vitally important that we know what precautions to take to safeguard our lungs from air pollution and its effects. Dr Adrita Banerjee, Stroke Specialist (MD Medicine) from Dhani tells us about 4 precautions we can undertake to safeguard our lung health from the effects of rising air pollution.

Wear a mask:
Wearing a mask not only protects us from smokes, fumes and other air pollutants, it also gives protection against contacting COVID-19. Hence it is important to wear a mask when we step out particularly during this season. Also, ensure to handwash your hands or use hand sanitizer before putting on a mask.

Avoid exercising outside during peak pollution time/ traffic:
One should also avoid exercising or going out during peak pollution hours such as high traffic times. Try and exercise inside your house or at a gym, as stepping out during this time exposes our lungs to toxic fumes and gases which have a very deleterious effect. One can do breathing exercises or yoga to keep the lungs healthy.

Nutritious diet:
A healthy balanced diet confers immunity against many illnesses including respiratory illness and this should be taken care of by everyone. Vitamin C is the most potent vitamin to combat lung-related health conditions. Foods like spinach, avocados, tomato and green-leafy vegetables are the most efficient sources of vitamin C.

Avoid smoking:
This is something that should be done at all times, but special attention should be paid to this during winters as lungs that are already compromised can be further weakened by smoking.

As far as possible, the elderly should try and stay and stay indoors during these times. People with conditions like asthma, bronchitis, COPD should take special care including taking their medications on time, wearing a mask and not exposing themselves to smoke and fumes.
