TOP 4 TIPS FOR A SAFE AND HEALTHY DIWALI

As Diwali is almost here, we can’t wait to celebrate the festival with colours, sparkle & delicious food. On behalf of Dhani, we wish you all happy festivities!

As we get busy and come together in the preparation of much-awaited celebrations, one must not forget the safety measures to take to enjoy Diwali wholeheartedly. Precautions around COVID-19 are necessary to follow for the well-being of our loved ones.

Dr. Smita Dash, the Chief Medical Officer at Dhani and a family physician is here with us today to help us understand safety measures and precautions to be taken during Diwali – so that we can all have a safe and joyous festival.

As far as possible, please avoid bursting crackers as the smoke and fumes arising from the crackers can cause health issues for many – especially, with the COVID -19 pandemic still being active. The smoke can affect the lungs and trigger asthma or bronchitis. It may also contribute to the irritation and burning sensation in the eyes.

For people who are already having these conditions, it may become worse as the smoke and fumes aggravate these ailments. They are also harmful to people with compromised lungs – especially those who are currently suffering from or previously had COVID-19 infection. Hence, be responsible and continue to use masks regularly to prevent the spread of COVID-19 and protect yourself from smoke & fumes. This also stands true for the elderly who should try and stay indoors as much as possible during this time.

Eat responsibly. People with diabetes must take special care to avoid excess sweets and deep-fried foods during festivities. Irresponsible intake of such foods can cause worsening of the condition with increased blood glucose levels and cholesterol levels. Avoid eating outside food as much as possible, food from outside can cause other stomach infections, which can affect your immunity and overall health. Also, nothing is better than home-cooked, traditional meal on a festival, right?

It is imperative to continue practicing hand hygiene. Wash your hands with soap and water. Be mindful of not using alcohol-based hand sanitizers while handling diyas, crackers, or candles as these can easily catch fire and cause injuries. Instead, use soap and water to wash your hands. Also, keep bottles of sanitizers away from diyas or fire.

Lastly, as we meet family and friends over Diwali amidst restrictions being somewhat relaxed, we must not forget that COVID-19 still pretty much exists. Maintain social distancing as much as possible. Meeting people virtually is also another great option. While meeting in person, avoid a hug – Namaste would be the best way to exchange greetings!
